Svostrup Kro

Ane ran the inn unmarried until 1966. Candles blow out — and footsteps are heard in the library with no guests present.

Svostrup Kro by the Gudenå River north of Silkeborg has been a royally privileged inn since 1834. Ane, the innkeeper, remained unmarried her whole life and ran the inn until October 1966. She had a suitor in her youth, but her parents did not approve of the match — after that she lived in a small annex 50 meters from the main house.

When Peder, the owner's son, died in 1973, only a few months passed before Ane herself went to sleep. They are said to have had a particularly close bond. The staff agrees on one thing: Ane is still fond of her inn. Candles blow out without any draft, and in the library clear footsteps are heard even though no guests are there. It is the same routine as in life — just from the other side of the door.
