Nørre Vosborg

A prophecy from the 1300s about a man in a blue cloak who would fell the tower — was fulfilled in 1532 by a storm surge.

Nørre Vosborg in West Jutland is one of Denmark's oldest estate centres. Niels Bugge, the estate's first known owner in the 1300s, is said according to legend to have received a cryptic prophecy: a man wrapped in a blue cloak from the west would fell the tower. When a gigantic storm surge in 1532 swept in from the North Sea and sank the entire complex, the prophecy was considered fulfilled — the estate was rebuilt on its present, safer location.

H.C. Andersen spent the summer of 1859 at Nørre Vosborg, where he wrote, cut his famous paper figures and openly fantasized about all the house's ghosts. His diary notes from the stay still form the basis for several of the location's remaining legends — and night guests at the now restored hotel regularly report a female figure in the park and footsteps in the upper corridors.
