Lindenborg Gods

Sophie Amalie was suspected of murdering her husband in 1678. Every July she repeats her final painful journey to Aalborg.

Lindenborg Gods south of Aalborg has one of Denmark's most dramatic aristocratic stories. Sophie Amalie Lindenov — great-granddaughter of Christian IV and Kirsten Munk — married Claus Daa in a deeply unhappy marriage. She had several affairs, he was harsh and controlling. When Claus Daa was shot down in an ambush in 1678, Sophie Amalie was suspected but never convicted. Folk legends tell that she lured lovers out onto a trapdoor in a locked cellar.

During a restoration in 1925–27, her ghost appeared to the architect himself. The estate administrator has seen a lady look out from a window on the top floor of the empty castle. Every July she repeats her final painful journey to Aalborg — a procession of horses and musicians moves across the courtyard, sometimes seen by night guests, and always disappears into the same mist.
