Room 318: a child's face breathing through the curtains. The elevator runs by itself. A "top hat man" stands in the corner.
Hotel Royal opposite Aarhus Cathedral is one of the city's oldest and most classic hotel addresses. The gilded elevator is Northern Europe's oldest in operation — and has a life entirely of its own. It starts at night, travels between floors without passengers, and night porters have given up trying to explain why.
The real terror, however, is in Room 318. Guests have woken to crying infants that should not be there, and several have seen a child's face breathing through the curtains with a clear outline of a nose and mouth. A "top hat man" — a tall, slender figure in a top hat — is sometimes seen standing in a corner of the room. Add to this the coachman's hat (displayed in the lobby) being knocked down when the cleaning is not in order, and shadows peering around corners in empty corridors.
