Hotel Kong Frederik

After the arsonist fire of 1973, the sound of a child crying and running water can be heard from the bathroom where a family died.

Hotel Kong Frederik on Vester Voldgade has one of Copenhagen's darkest hotel histories. On September 1, 1973, a fire was set by an arsonist at the neighbouring Hotel Hafnia. The fire claimed 35 lives — among them a married couple who, together with their two small children, had sought shelter in a bathroom, where they were later found dead.

The bathroom still exists in the rebuilt building, and guests on the upper floors have reported the same thing again and again: water running when no one is there, and crying that sounds like a very small child. The staff do not like to talk about it — but many night porters say they never walk past that door alone.
