Hotel d'Angleterre

Suite doors open and close in the middle of the night — H.C. Andersen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, and Robbie Williams have all encountered the ghosts.

Hotel d'Angleterre at Kongens Nytorv is Copenhagen's most aristocratic hotel — a building where royalty, presidents, and world stars have stayed since the 1700s. Beneath the façade's calm exterior, however, something entirely different occurs when the corridors are emptied of staff.

Guests are woken in the middle of the night by suite doors that open and close of their own accord. The hauntings have been known since H.C. Andersen stayed here and himself described nocturnal shadows. The Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson reported footsteps and voices in the hallway outside his room. In the 2010s, artist Robbie Williams openly spoke in interviews about feeling a presence in his suite — some are said to have rebooked to other hotels, while others specifically request the "haunted" room.
