Holckenhavn Castle
Fyn, Nyborg · Denmark · Slott · Scare 3/5
Renaissance castle from 1579–85 where Corfitz Ulfeldt and Leonora Christine were confined to house arrest in 1662 — guests hear strange sounds.
Holckenhavn Castle near Nyborg is one of Denmark's most beautiful Renaissance castles, built 1579–85 by Jacob Ulfeldt and expanded in the 1630s by Ellen Marsvin. In 1662, statesman Corfitz Ulfeldt and his wife Leonora Christine, Ellen Marsvin's granddaughter, were placed under house arrest at the castle — a period of political shame and enforced silence that seems to have left its mark.
The castle is said to harbor a number of ghosts. Guests and visitors have repeatedly reported strange sounds — knockings in the empty halls, footsteps moving along the upper corridors, and voices heard when the house should be locked. Who walks again is not entirely clear, but Leonora Christine's story is so deeply woven into Denmark's 1600s that the house can hardly let her go entirely.
