Herregaarden Odden
Jylland, Hjørring (Vendsyssel) · Denmark · Herrgård · Scare 4/5
A stuffed headless swan turned its head toward the unfaithful. An evil knight on horseback was conjured into the cellar floor — only the skull protrudes.
Herregaarden Odden in Mygdal was built around the middle of the 1400s. In the attic was long kept a stuffed headless swan — whenever an unmarried woman who was not a virgin entered the room, or an unfaithful husband or wife passed by, the swan turned its head toward them. It twisted so often that the neck was eventually torn off.
Down in the cellar, behind a barred door, a horse skull protrudes from the stone floor. According to legend, this is all that is visible of an evil knight on horseback who was conjured into the floor by a priest. The crosses painted on the walls around the room have never been explained by anyone — but during the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was common to mark houses for protection against evil powers, and Odden appears to have needed a great deal of such protection.
