Comwell Bygholm Park Horsens

Jylland, Horsens · Denmark · Hotell · Scare 3/5

Abel Maria died locked away above the halls. She demanded to keep her crystal wedding crown — it still hangs there.

Bygholm outside Horsens was originally a manor and is today run by the Comwell hotel chain as a conference hotel. Behind the modern interior, however, lies the story of Abel Maria de Lichtenberg, who married into the estate in 1768. All four of her children died young, and she fell into a deep depression which her husband handled in the manner of the time — he had her locked in a secluded space above the main halls because she was no longer "presentable".

Abel Maria demanded that her wedding crystal crown be moved upstairs and threatened that Bygholm would burn to the ground if it was removed. The crown still hangs beneath the roof beams, and she died alone in her confinement in 1810, aged 71. Guests have reported strange experiences in the rooms where she was locked away — the temperature drops, doors lock from within, and several have felt a presence that simply awaits company.
