Broholm Castle

Fyn, Gudme · Denmark · Slott · Scare 3/5

The Grey Lady is seen in the bathroom mirror. She watches the shaving closely — but appears in the nursery to watch over sleeping children.

Broholm Castle in South Funen has medieval roots and is today run as a hotel. The Grey Lady — an older woman in a grey dress — was first seen during the time of hunting master Jørgen Sehested as owner 1924–1977 and has since remained the house's most persistent figure.

A guest was shaving one morning and suddenly saw an older woman in a grey dress behind him in the mirror. When he turned around, she was gone — but in the mirror she reappeared and closely watched his shaving. The old wooden floor creaks under the carpets at the slightest step, but not when she walks. In doorways she can stand silently and observe sleeping children — legend has it that she was a nursemaid and cannot let go of the children she spent her life caring for.
