Bastion Carolus Rex / Dux — The Underground Mortuary
Västra Götaland · Sweden · Befästning · Scare 3/5
Casemates used as a mortuary in the 1800s — stalactites like pearl draperies hanging from the ceiling.
The passages (casemates) were used in the 1800s as a mortuary while bodies awaited burial. The natural cold of 5–6 degrees kept the bodies chilled. Visitors today testify to an “enchanted mood” with huge stalactite formations hanging like pearl curtains from the ceiling.
Facts: Bastion Carolus Rex was used for a period for storing gunpowder, but leakage spoiled the powder and the premises were instead turned into a prison for German and Russian prisoners of war. These prisoners took part in building the city's fortifications.
